Ancient Egypt, Third Intermediate to Late Dynastic Period, 21st to 31st Dynasty, ca 1070 to 332 BCE. A stunning necklace comprised of dozens and dozens of disc-shaped faience beads of cobalt blue, seafoam green, golden yellow, rich burgundy, and creamy beige hues - and at the center, a marvelous aqua faience amulet finely carved to represent a hare-headed deity - perhaps the goddess Unut (or Wenet) or if male, a version of Osiris known as Wepuat or Un-nefer who was annually sacrificed on the Nile River in this hare form. A wonderful and wearable example of modern fashion meets ancient art! Size (necklace): 22.25" L (56.5 cm); (amulet): 0.7" H (1.8 cm)

To the Egyptians, faience was known as "tjehnet," meaning brilliant or dazzling. It was made by grinding quartz or sand crystals together with various elements. Faience beads were used in jewelry as well as special burial nets carefully placed over mummies.

  • Condition: Strung in modern times and wearable as shown. Faience beads are ancient, and stringing, loop, and clasp are modern.
