Description:

Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom to Third Intermediate Period, 18th to 25th Dynasty, ca. 1550 to 664 BCE. A mold-formed faience funerary amulet covered in lustrous blue-green glaze depicting Duamutef, the jackal-headed Son of Horus. The left-facing deity stands in mummiform with bound limbs and a rigid pose, and beneath his canine head is a tall shroud meant to emulate the lid of a canopic jar. Amulets like this were placed atop the linen wrappings of a mummy for protection, and the imprints of said wrappings are still visible on the verso. Duamutef was tasked with protecting the stomach of the deceased and was himself protected by the goddess Neith. Size: 0.75" W x 2.8" H (1.9 cm x 7.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, acquired before 2000
