Description:

Egypt, probably New Kingdom, ca. 1550 to 1069 BCE. This is a charming blue-green scarab set into a modern 14k gold ring. On the underside of the scarab, visible on the inside of the ring, is an abstract design of open scrolls with a column. "Egyptian faience" was known as "tjehnet" to the ancient Egyptians, meaning brilliant or dazzling. It was made by grinding quartz or sand crystals together with various elements, including copper oxide, which gave it its distinct blue/green tint. In the Egyptian New Kingdom there was a noticeable increase in production and color range of faience, probably under the influence of trade with western Asia. This ring is light to wear and I found myself wearing it as I wrote this description! Ring size: 5 to 5-1/2 (2"/5 cm in diameter).
