Description:

Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A well-preserved, mold-formed faience amulet of Bes, the bandy-legged dwarf deity who was a protector of women, children, and those within a home. Bes presents nude while standing atop attenuated legs, a stocky 'tail' emanating from his posterior, and a shaggy mane that resembles a pharaonic wesekh collar. His countenance exhibits raised brows, fierce eyes, full cheeks, and a wispy beard, all beneath a feathered headdress. Covered in light yellow-green glaze, this is an intriguing artifact from ancient Egypt! Size: 0.83" L x 1.29" W x 2.92" H (2.1 cm x 3.3 cm x 7.4 cm)

Provenance: Collection of Dr. W. Benson Harer, Los Angeles, California, USA; ex-Harlan Berk, March 29, 2006, lot 471
