Description:

Ancient Egypt, Third Intermediate to Late Dynastic Period, 21st to 31st Dynasty, ca. 1070 to 332 BCE. A hand-carved steatite scarab amulet of a petite size with the topside exhibiting slender legs tucked beneath a folded wing carapace as well as a triangular head. The bottom features an incised image of a minimalist feline standing on all fours with a slightly raised head, perhaps representing a lioness or a panther. Faint remains of blue-green glaze are still visible in some areas and allude to how extravagant this scarab appeared at one time. Size: 0.625" L x 0.4" W (1.6 cm x 1 cm)

Provenance: ex-Phillip Mitry collection, noted antiquities dealer in Cairo, Egypt before emigrating to the United States in 1951
