Description:

Ancient Egypt, Third Intermediate to Late Dynastic Period, ca. 1070 to 332 BCE. A beautiful, simple use of ancient faience seed beads. Three colors - black, creamy white, and the classic blue-green - are each strung separately, joined together at a modern gold-plated S-hook finding. Faience was known as "tjehnet" to the ancient Egyptians, meaning brilliant or dazzling. It was made by grinding quartz or sand crystals together with various materials, including, for example, copper oxide, which gave some of these beads their distinct blue/green tint. Faience beads were used in everyday jewelry and also used to make burial nets to be placed over mummies. Size: 25" L (63.5 cm)

Provenance: beads acquired from private Los Angeles, California, USA collection
