Description:

Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th Dynasty, ca. 664 to 525 BCE; Roman, Imperial period, Holyland, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A wonderful trio of ancient artifacts: a Roman pottery oil lamp, an Egyptian faience ushabti, and an Egyptian faience djed amulet. First, the mold-made oil lamp presents an ovoid body, a wick spout, and a sloped shoulder adorned with dozens of incised dashes as a petite handle rises from behind the annular fill hole. Alternatively, the amulets have great iconographic significance. The djed pillar is highly symbolic of the spine - especially that of Osiris, god of the underworld - and was believed to be the energy conduit necessary for resurrecting the dead - and the ushabti was intended to help the deceased with farmwork in the Afterlife. Size of largest (oil lamp): 2.6" L x 3.7" W x 1.5" H (6.6 cm x 9.4 cm x 3.8 cm)

Provenance: private Clemmons, North Carolina, USA collection; Egyptian amulets: acquired from Harmer Rooke Gallery, New York, New York, USA, December 16, 1978 / Lamp: acquired from Hamakor Judaica Inc, Niles, Illinois, USA
