Description:

Egypt, Third Intermediate Period, 21st to 25th Dynasty, ca. 1069 to 653 BCE; Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 672 to 332 BCE. A pair of faience ushabtis, both enveloped in blue-green glaze. Created during the Late Dynastic Period, the larger ushabti presents traditionally, standing mummiform with a back pillar, holding 1 pick and 1 hoe, and wearing a tripartite wig and false beard. Alternatively, the more petite ushabti is a fragment from the Third Intermediate Period and wears a painted seshet while holding 2 hoes. Size of larger: 1.4" W x 5" H (3.6 cm x 12.7 cm)

Provenance: private Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA collection; ex-Minerva Gallery; ex-Benjamin Vega, California, USA, acquired in 2006 to 2007; ex-Gene and Virginia George, brought to the USA from 1961 to 1966

  • Condition: Third Intermediate Period ushabti is a fragment of a larger piece with chipping to glaze. Larger has been professionally repaired with some small losses along visible break line and chipping to back of pedestal. Both have nicks and abrasions to surface. Good remains of glaze on larger and nice remaining black pigment on fragment.
