Description:

Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, Thebes, 26th Dynasty, ca. 664 to 525 BCE. A fine mold-formed faience ushabti covered in a pale aqua-hued glaze. The figure stands in mummiform with fused legs atop an integral rectangular plinth, holds the symbolic pick and hoe in arms crossed atop the chest, and has a faint incised seed bag draped behind the left shoulder. Slender almond-shaped eyes, a petite nose, thin lips, cupped ears, and a false beard comprise the sensitive visage, and the head is capped with a simple tripartite wig. The torso and legs display nine registers of inscribed hieroglyphic text which, while untranslated, provide the name of the deceased along with an invocation of protection from Chapter 6 of the Egyptian Book of the Dead (or Book of Going Forth by Day). Size: 1.125" W x 4.875" H (2.9 cm x 12.4 cm).
