Description:

Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A mold-formed faience amulet of Tawaret (also Tauret), the ancient Egyptian goddess of child birthing and protector of women, children, and the weak. Tawaret stands atop a narrow rectangular plinth and presents with her characteristic composite features of a lioness, a crocodile, and most recognizably her hippopotamus head. The amulet is covered in lustrous pale green glaze, and a petite suspension hole is situated behind her head. Size: 0.375" W x 1.375" H (1 cm x 3.5 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Dr. Sid Port collection, California, USA, acquired in 1980

  • Condition: Repairs to feet at ankles and front of plinth, with light adhesive residue along break lines. Minor softening to some finer details and light encrustations. Nice remains of glaze pigment throughout.
