Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom period, 18th Dynasty, reign of Queen Hatshepsut, ca. 1479 to 1458 BCE. A mold-formed faience scarab of a petite size that is covered with lustrous blue-green glaze. The insectile features on the top include a folded wing carapace, retracted legs, and a petite head just above one end of the biconically drilled suspension hole. The underside features a minimalist depiction of an ibis and a heron - both birds associated with Thoth, the ibis-headed god of wisdom - with delineated feathers, curved necks, and slender beaks. Size: 0.5" L x 0.375" W (1.3 cm x 1 cm).
