Description:

Egypt, Middle Kingdom to Second Intermediate Period, 11th to 17th Dynasty, ca. 2130 to 1550 BCE. A lovely mold-formed faience scarab covered in lustrous layers of blue-green glaze. The beetle-form topside has a folded carapace, a petite head, and retracted legs, with a lengthwise biconical suspension hole. The underside features four inscribed hieroglyphs: a uraeus cobra, a heart-and-windpipe, a bowl on the bottom, and a standing falcon wearing the double crown of Upper and Lower Egypt. Size: 1" L x 0.75" W (2.5 cm x 1.9 cm).

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection; ex-Phillip Mitry collection, noted dealer in Cairo, Egypt until about 1951 when he emigrated to the United States

  • Condition: Minor abrasions to top and bottom, with fading to original glaze pigmentation, and softening to some finer details and inscribed hieroglyphs, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits within some recessed areas, and nice traces of original glaze color throughout.
