Description:

Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, early 26th Dynasty, probably during the reign of King Psamtik I, ca. 664 to 610 BCE. A petite faience scarab covered in blue-green glaze and bearing intricately incised hieroglyphs on the bottom. Displayed on the topside are characteristic insectile features such as a narrow head with a frilled clypeus, a broad shoulder, and sinuous legs tucked beneath the folded wing carapace. The underside bears four hieroglyphs: a sun disc, a right-facing lion, a standing figure, and a prone figure. The feline creature is representative of Maahes, the lion god of war, knives, and devouring captive prisoners, and the prone figure represents the resurrection of the soul in the afterlife. Size: 0.625" L x 0.4" W (1.6 cm x 1 cm)
