Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A lovely mold-formed faience ushabti figure meant to accompany a deceased individual into the afterlife. The slender figure stands with fused legs atop an integral plinth, holds a pick and hoe in arms crossed atop the chest, and displays a seed bag behind the left shoulder. The stylized countenance is framed within the lappets of the tripartite wig, and a T-shaped hieroglyphic inscription is shown on the front of the legs and lower body. Lustrous blue-green glaze envelops the entire figure in layers of color. Size: 1.125" W x 4.375" H (2.9 cm x 11.1 cm)

Provenance: private Vero Beach, Florida, USA collection, acquired in the 1980s from the Druout Auction House; ex-old private French collection

  • Condition: Nicks and pitting to feet, body, and head, with chip to tip of nose colored in modern times with green ink, and softening to hieroglyphs and some finer details, otherwise intact and very good. Great preservation of overall form and glaze pigment throughout.
