Description:

Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A hand-carved steatite plaque pendant featuring Hathor, the primordial goddess of women, fertility, and the sky, standing with a sistrum in front of the falcon-headed god Horus. Horus sits on a throne, wears a tall headdress with a frontal uraeus cobra, and holds a was-scepter in his outstretched left hand. Layers of blue-green glaze cover this side of the pendant in a wash of vibrant color. The verso is oriented vertically and depicts several hieroglyphs, and a suspension hole is bored lengthwise through the body. Size: 0.55" L x 0.45" W (1.4 cm x 1.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-private K.C. collection, Linden, Michigan, USA, acquired in July 1995 from Royal-Athena Galleries, New York, New York, USA; on loan to Ball State University Art Museum, George Mason University, and the Fitchburg Art Museum between 1995 and 2015
