Description:

Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A hand-carved steatite scarab amulet bearing remains of crimson- and turquoise-hued glaze. The convex topside exhibits insectile features such as a bulging wing carapace, a slender head, and sinuous legs tucked beneath; a suspension hole is drilled lengthwise through the body. The underside features 3 incised hieroglyphs including a winged scarab, a uraeus cobra, and a pair of crossed arrows representing the goddess Neith. Neith was the goddess of the Nile Delta town Sais - where the pharaonic seat of power was held during the 26th Dynasty - and was one of 4 protector goddesses who guarded canopic jars and coffins.   • Condition: Abrasions and minor softening to some finer details, with fading to glaze pigment, and encrustations within some hieroglyphs, otherwise intact and very good. Nice preservation to overall form and good remains of glaze pigment in scattered areas.
