Description:

Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A compelling feldspar scarab, carved in the familiar beetle form with clearly defined clypeus, pronotum, and wing cases. The underside preserves faint traces of an inscription, its hieroglyphs softened by centuries of handling and burial. The body is laterally drilled, allowing the piece to be strung and worn as a bead or pendant, underscoring its function as both ornament and talisman. Scarabs in ancient Egypt symbolized rebirth and regeneration, reflecting the solar cycle of the god Ra, imagined as a cosmic scarab pushing the sun across the heavens. Such amulets were worn in life and placed with the dead, believed to safeguard and renew the spirit. The choice of feldspar, particularly the green amazonite variety, imbued the scarab with additional resonance, its verdant hue linked with fertility, regeneration, and eternal life. Size: 0.75" L x 0.5" W x 0.4" H (1.9 cm x 1.3 cm x 1 cm)

This amulet, though modest in scale, embodies the enduring devotional practices of Late Dynastic Egypt, carrying within it a sacred beetle's form, traces of sacred text, and a luminous green stone chosen for its protective power.
