Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom, early 18th Dynasty, reign of Amenhotep I, ca. 1525 to 1504 BCE. A beautiful scarab carved from a piece of opaque, forest green jasper bearing a cartouche for pharaoh Amenhotep I on the base. The incised topside exhibits characteristic insectile features such as a frilled head with petite eyes, a folded wing carapace, and narrow legs tucked beneath the convex body. The bottom features six hieroglyphs that spell out the name of Amenhotep including a feather of Ma'at, a board game, a water ripple, a loaf on a mat, a stool or reed mat, and a bun. A finely preserved example of a pharaonic amulet! Size: 0.625" L x 0.4" W (1.6 cm x 1 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Orange, California, USA collection, inherited by descent from Philip Mitry, noted antiquarian in Cairo prior to 1951, when he immigrated to the US; found in Deir el-Bahari
