Description:

Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A hand-carved calcite jar exhibiting an inverted piriform body and a planar base beneath a corseted neck and flared rim, all in characteristic Late Dynastic manner. The soft white hue of the stone is as pleasing to the eye today as it was in ancient Egypt given how prized a material it was. Such vessels would have held precious scented oils or cosmetics for women to use after bathing as indicated by scenes on ancient vases depicting them in use. Size: 3.9" Diameter x 5" H (9.9 cm x 12.7 cm)

Provenance: private London, UK collection; ex-private collection of Mrs. B. Ellison, a deceased former member of the Egyptian Exploration Fund, bought in the 1940s, Cairo and London

  • Condition: Professionally repaired with some chipping and minor losses along visible break lines. Chipping to rim and edges of base, as well as some nicks and pitting to surface. Otherwise, nice presentation with lovely translucent calcite. Shine a flashlight on the interior or hold up to the sun to watch the light cascade through the crystal matrices!
