Description:

Egypt, Late Period to Ptolemaic, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A small yet finely rendered Egyptian faience ushabti, formed in the traditional mummiform pose with arms crossed and hands clutching agricultural implements for work in the afterlife. The figure wears a tripartite wig framing a serene face, its features still discernible despite age. Faint traces of inscription remain down the front of the legs, once naming the individual for whom this ushabti was made. The faience, with its soft pale green glaze weathered to white and earthen tones, carries the ancient surface encrustations and mineral deposits that testify to centuries of burial. Ushabtis were funerary figures placed in tombs to serve as substitute laborers in the next world, ensuring the deceased would not be burdened with agricultural tasks. By the Late Period, sets of dozens or even hundreds might accompany elite burials, each inscribed with excerpts from Chapter 6 of the Book of the Dead. Size: 0.8" L x 1.3" W x 3.3" H (2 cm x 3.3 cm x 8.4 cm)

This example, though modest in scale, encapsulates the enduring Egyptian belief in preparation for eternity and the role of magical objects in ensuring a prosperous afterlife.
