Description:

Egypt, Late Dynastic period, 27th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 525 to 332 BCE. A beautifully molded faience ushabti in luminous turquoise blue, embodying both the ritual and artistry of Egypt's Late Dynastic period. Depicted in mummiform, the figure crosses both arms over the chest, each hand gripping agricultural implements - symbols of the labor the deceased would perform in the afterlife. The face is serene, its features softly defined beneath a tripartite wig, while traces of hieroglyphs run vertically down the front of the legs, once invoking a spell from the Book of the Dead to awaken the figure for its eternal duties. Size: 0.75" L x 1.5" W x 5" H (1.9 cm x 3.8 cm x 12.7 cm)

Though miniature, this ushabti held mighty spiritual responsibility: it was a servant for the afterlife, animated by magic and the words of the living. This example, with its gentle sheen and time-softened detail, evokes the quiet devotion of those who prepared for eternity. Its form is a testament to continuity - the belief in the afterlife unchanged across dynasties, even as Egypt faced foreign rule and cultural transition. From tomb to display, it remains a voice of the ancient world, still ready to answer the call.
