Description:

Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A mold-formed faience ushabti that is covered in layers of blue-green glaze that have darkened to forest-green and chocolate-brown hues. The figure stands in mummiform with fused legs atop an integral plinth, holds a pick and hoe in arms crossed atop the chest, and has a seed bag incised behind the left shoulder. The face exhibits puffy eyes and lips above a plaited false beard, and a tripartite wig covers the top of the head. A fine example from ancient Egypt. Size: 1.4" W x 4.4" H (3.6 cm x 11.2 cm); 4.8" H (12.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Vero Beach, Florida, USA collection, originally acquired in England in the mid 1960s

  • Condition: Minor abrasions and pitting to head, body, and legs, with fading and minor darkening to areas of glaze pigment, softening to some finer details, and light encrustations, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits and nice remains of glaze pigment throughout.
