Description:

Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A mold-formed faience ushabti that is covered with lustrous blue-green glaze. The figure stands in mummiform with fused legs atop an integral rectangular plinth, holds the symbolic pick and hoe in hands crossed atop the wide chest, and has a small seed bag incised behind the left shoulder. The serene countenance exhibits almond-shaped eyes with elongated canthi, puffy cheeks, cupped ears, and a plaited false beard, all beneath an incised tripartite wig. A column of inscribed hieroglyphic text is presented on the front of the figure and, while untranslated, would provide the name of Osiris as well as that of the deceased. Size: 1.25" W x 4.7" H (3.2 cm x 11.9 cm).
