Description:

Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, Dynasty 30, ca. 379 to 343 BCE. A tumultuous period in ancient Egypt with warfare with the Persians (Achaemenid Empire) almost constant. This was made during this period - the last fully independent period in ancient Egyptian history. Carved brown granite in scarab form, wings and head indicated by incised lines. Underside is inscribed in 10 lines of hieroglyphs, most likely a passage from the Book of the Dead - a number of magic spells intended to assist a dead person's journey through the Duat, or underworld, and into the afterlife. This "book" was written by many priests over a period of about 1,000 years. A heart amulet like this was often inserted into the chest cavity, or inner mummy wrappings of the deceased during mummification. Size: 2.625" L x 1.875" W (6.7 cm x 4.8 cm)
