Description:

Ancient Egypt, Late Period, ca. 700 to 30 BCE. Fragments of tightly-woven linen used as wrappings for an Egyptian mummy set in a glass-fronted Riker case. There is some white gesso (a mixture of chalk, pigment, and gypsum) over one of the linen strips. A surface like this made for a more stable surface for painting traditional Egyptian funerary symbols. By the time of the Late Dynastic period, the elaborate funerary rituals and furniture of the Egyptian grave were associated with not only the elite, but others as well, representing a newfound democratization of death, and opening up access to privileged religious and afterlife-ensuring rituals to many more members of the society. Size: 16.125" L x 12.125" W (41 cm x 30.8 cm)
