Description:

Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A fine amulet carved from mottled brown and dark gray steatite showcasing a ram striding forward atop an integral rectangular plinth. The ram exhibits a gently curved back, plump hind legs beneath an attenuated tail, and a raised neck surmounted by its tapered head. Almond-shaped eyes flank the slender snout and petite nostrils, and surrounding each ear is a semicircular horn with lightly incised grooves. The ram in ancient Egyptian mythology is symbolic of Khnum, one of the oldest deities who is believed to be the source of the Nile River and the creator who molded human bodies and other deities from the rich silt along the river's banks. Size: 1.3" L x 1.2" H (3.3 cm x 3 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, acquired before 2000
