Description:

Egypt, New Kingdom, Ramesside Period, ca. 1292 to 1069 BCE. An iconographically rich Egyptian stele comprised of limestone carved in two substantive registers. The upper register depicts three figures including a priest with a shaved head wearing a long pleated kilt, with his benefactor standing behind him; both figures are making offerings to the God Ptah, the demiurge of Memphis (god of craftsmen and architects, spouse of Sekhmet, father of Nefertum, and father of sage Imhotep). The hieroglyphic inscription translates: "Ptah, lord of the two lands" and then lists the name of the main person praising Ptah. Following this, it reads "his son, ...", however unfortunately the son's name has worn away. The scene on the lower register depicts a woman with her arms raised in adoration, kneeling before a table with a crocodile, perhaps representing Sobek, the Egyptian deity associated with fertility, military might, and pharoanic leadership, who is also linked with the Nile crocodile that protects against the perils of the Nile River. A rare piece!Custom wood block stand. Size: stele itself measures 6-1/2" x 4" (16.5 x 10.2 cm) high; .

The Ramesside period is named for the eleven kings named Ramesses who reigned over Egypt in the 19th to 20th Dynasties. Ramesses II reigned from about 1184 to 1153 BCE and left more monuments for posterity than any other Egyptian ruler. These served as models for the entire Ramesside Period.
