Egypt, Late Dynastic period, ca. 712 to 332 BCE. A section of a sarcophagus panel created to cover the feet of the mummy, made from cartonnage - gesso (a mixture of chalk, pigment, and gypsum) over wide linen strips. A plastered surface like this formed a more stable surface for painting the hieroglyphs featured in the lower border in black and framed by an azure blue border. Size: 9.75" W x 8.5" H (24.8 cm x 21.6 cm)
