Description:

Ancient Egypt, Middle Kingdom, 11th to 12th Dynasty, ca. 2030 to 1640 BCE. A wonderful jar for storing kohl, expertly carved from a pale blue marble (anhydrite). The elegant vessel rests on a flat base with the piriform body swelling upward to a short neck and wide rim. The mouth opening is narrow and leads into the hollow body. This jar is a petite size, perfect for holding in the palm of your hand. The small opening is wide enough for fitting a kohl applicator like a spatula or a finger. In fact, this jar has remnants of the black kohl contents within the interior basin! The light blue-gray coloration of the anhydrite is remarkable as well, and certainly a treasured possession of an elite Egyptian. Size: 1.5" W x 2" H (3.8 cm x 5.1 cm)

Provenance: private Salisbury, Maryland, USA collection;ex-Archeologia Galleries, Montreal, prior to 1980
