Description:

Ancient Egypt, Middle Kingdom, 11th to 13th Dynasty, ca. 2030 to 1650 BCE. A wonderful example of a petite jar used to contain kohl eye make-up or other cosmetics material. Hand-carved from jet-black basalt, the jar is of a squat form with a round but stable base, a carinated midsection that rounds up to a smooth shoulder, and a drilled-out central cavity that was once perhaps covered by a lid. The highly polished surfaces exude a dark luster that creates an appealing presentation. Size: 1.875" W x 0.75" H (4.8 cm x 1.9 cm)

Provenance: private Salisbury, Maryland, USA collection; ex-private New York, USA collection; ex-Arte Curial, Paris, France, November 6, 2013 (lot 82); ex-Galerie Reiner, Paris, France, acquired January 1980
