Description:

Egypt, Middle Kingdom, Dynasties 11 to 13, ca. 2055 to 1650 BCE. A refined weapon of the Middle Kingdom, this Egyptian bronze dagger reflects the technological and artistic sophistication of Dynasties 11 through 13, a period marked by political renewal and expanding influence along the Nile. Cast in bronze with a long, tapering triangular blade, the dagger narrows to a sharp point, its surface now cloaked in a deep green patina formed over centuries of burial. The blade broadens at the base into a defined shoulder before transitioning into the integral hilt. Subtle ridges and recessed channels along the grip reveal careful casting and finishing, attesting to the growing mastery of copper alloy metallurgy during this era. Size: 10.3" L x 2.3" W (26.2 cm x 5.8 cm)

The pommel is missing and was likely made from bone or ivory, materials frequently used in Middle Kingdom weaponry to provide counterweight and a secure hold. A series of small perforations along the hilt mark the positions where bolts or rivets once secured the organic pommel and possibly additional grip components. These fastening elements are now absent, leaving the bronze core exposed and clearly illustrating its original composite construction.

Daggers of this type served both as practical sidearms and as emblems of rank. During the Middle Kingdom - a time of centralized authority, ambitious building programs, and renewed artistic clarity - such weapons could accompany soldiers, officials, and elites, and were often placed in tombs as symbols of protection and status. Though incomplete, the dagger maintains a commanding profile. Its elongated blade and bifurcated hilt base create a distinctive silhouette, while the surviving bronze framework preserves the craftsmanship of an age when Egypt consolidated its power and refined its martial and artistic traditions.
