Description:

Egypt, Middle Kingdom, 2000 to 1700 BCE. This is a calcite stone offering plate; it has a flat foot and a slightly concave surface. The color of the stone is very nice. Plates like these were placed inside of Egyptian temples and votive offerings were left in them. During the Middle Kingdom, when this stone bowl was made, Osiris, the green-skinned lord of the dead and the underworld, was the chief god in the Egyptian pantheon; this bowl may have been used in a temple to him. Size: 11" in diameter x 2-1/2" H (28 cm x 6.4 cm).

Provenance: Ex-private Simonian collection, Switzerland, acquired before 1983.
