Description:

Ancient Egypt, Third Intermediate to Late Dynastic Period, ca. 1070 to 332 BCE. A dramatic mummified head of an ibis, its long beak beautifully preserved, as are its large eye sockets and curved head. The ibis, an elegant, long-legged wading bird that lives along the shores of the Nile, was associated with the god Thoth. He was the god of wisdom and writing, and in worship to him many thousands of ibises were ritually sacrificed, embalmed, and mummified before being buried in underground galleries. Thousands of these burials have been excavated at Sakkara, near Memphis, Egypt's ancient capital. This example is stored in a shadow box. Size of head: 7.8" W x 1.7" H (19.8 cm x 4.3 cm); size of box: 3.45" L x 11" W x 9" H (8.8 cm x 27.9 cm x 22.9 cm)
