Description:

Egypt, New Kingdom to Late Period, ca. 1550 to 332 BCE. A framed relic consisting of a section of ancient mummy linen cloth. The textile fragment is mounted under glass in a modern wood frame, accompanied by an old handwritten label noting that it was unwrapped in 1849 at the Assembly Building, 10th & Chestnut Street, (Philadelphia) by Professor George R. Gliddon, the well-known Egyptologist and lecturer. A tangible piece of 19th-century Egyptomania, reflecting the public fascination with mummy unwrappings - then a popular social event - and Victorian collecting traditions.

George R. Gliddon (1809-1857) was an English-born Egyptologist who spent much of his youth in Egypt before becoming a celebrated lecturer in the United States. He served as U.S. vice-consul in Cairo and was closely connected with Muhammad Ali's modernization efforts. In America, Gliddon became widely known for his "Panorama of the Nile", a traveling exhibition that combined a 900-foot painted panorama with lectures, music, and displays of Egyptian antiquities. The show introduced thousands of Americans to the history, art, and culture of ancient Egypt, turning biblical references into vivid, visual experiences for its audiences. Although the exhibition was relatively short-lived, it left a lasting impression and helped spark broader public interest in Egyptology during the mid-19th century.
