Description:

Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom, 19th Dynasty, reign of Ramesses II, ca. 1279 to 1213 BCE. A mold-formed faience vessel, of a tapering cylindrical form with a slightly-flared rim and foot, covered in a vivid blue-green glaze and painted with black pigment. A pair of black-painted columns display the cartouche of Ramesses II, beloved of Sokar. The function of this vessel was funerary based on the dedication to Sokar, an Egyptian god of the underworld, while giving the king's name and saying that he was beloved by the underworld god. Faience cups were placed in tombs holding different kinds of food and drink as an offering. Blue faience symbolized the color of the Nile river, both on earth and in the afterlife. Size: 1.3" W x 2.2" H (3.3 cm x 5.6 cm).
