Description:

Ancient Egypt, Old Kingdom, 3rd to 6th Dynasty, ca. 2686 to 2181 BCE. A hand-carved model of a milling stone. The petite utilitarian tool consists of a discoid lower body with a smooth grinding surface, a central wooden dowel, and a ring-shaped upper body with a slender wooden handle projecting from the top. Millstones like this example were used by stone sculptors as scale models for building larger models and improving upon older construction techniques, though they were also used in domestic homes for pulverizing more pedestrian volumes of certain materials. Size: 4.5" W x 3.6" H (11.4 cm x 9.1 cm).

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in 2016; ex-Ancient Resource, Los Angeles, California, USA
