Description:

Ancient Egypt, Old Kingdom, ca. 2400 to 2250 BCE. A marble mortar and limestone pestle, used for grinding ritual materials and cooking. The pestle is heavy, blunt-ended on one side, tapering to a conical point on the other. The mortar is round, with a shallow depression on one side to form a grinding surface. This shows signs of wear and use. Size of pestle: 1.8" W x 5.85" H (4.6 cm x 14.9 cm); size of mortar: 3.3" W x 1.1" H (8.4 cm x 2.8 cm)

Provenance: private purchase in 1992 (Collum Antiquities, Belleair Bluffs, Florida, USA, who acquired the items from Professor John Fox, Ph.D of the American University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, who purchased them while traveling in Cairo, Egypt in 1961)
