Description:

Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A hand-carved wooden mummy mask meant to act as a stylized representation of a deceased individual. The mask is first covered in gesso and painted with pigments in red, black, burnt umber, and yellow hues. The large, almond-shaped eyes stand out among the nose and mouth, and a striped headdress is set low along the smooth forehead. Four drilled dowel holes present on the verso highlight how the mask attached to a larger wooden sarcophagus. The mask is displayed within a modern frame. Size (mask): 1.4" L x 5" W x 7" H (3.6 cm x 12.7 cm x 17.8 cm); (display frame): 3.8" L x 13.9" W x 16.7" H (9.7 cm x 35.3 cm x 42.4 cm)
