Ancient Egypt, Middle Kingdom period, 11th to 13th Dynasty, ca. 2130 to 1649 BCE. A fine depiction of a sacred boatman figure, hand-carved from wood in the characteristic kneeling position of a rower. The red-painted figure wears a simple white skirt and has carved mortises in his shoulders that once held the tenons of the original oar-grasping arms. Once carved, the figure was covered in a thin layer of gesso and painted with deep red and black pigments. This example still retains carved facial features, painted eyes, and a simple black coiffure. Archaeologists typically find two model boats in almost all tombs from the Middle Kingdom period, and they are usually staffed by boatmen like this one. Size: 1.5" W x 3.75" H (3.8 cm x 9.5 cm)
