Description:

Ancient Egypt, Middle Kingdom to Late Dynastic Period, 11th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 2050 to 332 BCE. An ovoid mold-formed amulet of crimson-hued paste glass depicting the hieroglyph for a heart. The heart hieroglyph consists of a teardrop-shaped jar with lug handles on either side and a cross-shaped handled lid. This amulet would have likely been sewn into the lining of mummy wrappings or placed atop the body before burial in order to preserve the body, heart, and soul before venturing forth into the afterlife. Size: 0.7" W x 1" H (1.8 cm x 2.5 cm).
