Description:

Egypt, Third Intermediate Period, dynasties 20 through 26, ca. 1078 to 664 BCE. Rare wooden mummiform figure of a sarcophagus. Carved from cedar and covered in gesso - painted plaster - this piece depicts a closed simple casket with a human-form head wearing a large wig, with mummy net across the chest, and a small band of painted black hieroglyphs upon the reverse. The helmet style of this example is very similar to many such full-size mummy sarcophagus sections we have handled over the years. The purpose of such miniature sarcophagi figures was possibly to use as models used by merchants/makers of such full-size pieces or to be entered into a tomb for some spiritual reason. Fascinating and quite rare! Size: 9.5" H (24.1 cm); 11" H (27.9 cm) on included custom stand.
