Egypt, Ptolemaic-Roman, ca. 1st BCE - 1st CE . This is the front and back portion of a wooden frame which could have possibly been part of a stand to hold a sarcophagus in ancient times. The legs are modeled in the form of a lion and lioness - the front part of the stand depicts the heads and forepaws and the back of the frame, which would have originally been attached with side rails, now missing, is modeled on the rear part of a lions. The piece is a very substantial example of ancient Egyptian woodwork, with extensive remains of white and yellow pigments. Size: Each leg measures 12-1/4"H (31 cm); on stand 30"H x 20-1/4” W depth 8-1/2"H + custom mount.
