Description:

Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom to Third Intermediate Period, ca. 1550–712 BCE. A carved wooden shabti figure, painted in warm reddish-brown and black pigments, with faint remains of white gesso ground and traces of hieroglyphs down the front of the legs. The figure stands in mummiform posture with arms crossed over the chest, hands clutching what may once have been modeled hoes or implements—traditional emblems for agricultural labor in the afterlife. Size: 9" H (22.9 cm)

Wearing a tripartite wig and serene facial features, this shabti would have been placed among dozens or hundreds of similar figures within a tomb, intended to carry out manual tasks on behalf of the deceased. The presence of inscribed text, even if fragmentary, would typically reference the Shabti Spell (Chapter 6 of the Book of the Dead) and may include the name or title of the tomb owner.
