Description:

Egypt, probably pre-Dynastic / Naqada I period, ca. 4400 to 3500 BCE; Naqada II or III, ca. 3500 to 3000 BCE. An attractive pair of Egyptian mace heads: one hand-carved from dark gray hematite and the other made from faience and enveloped in a light green glaze. Created in the Naqada I period, the hematite mace head presents a disc-shaped body, while the faience weapon displays a form resembling an apple. Both are drilled with large socketing holes, indicating they may have been mounted on handles of perishable materials before being placed in tombs. Mace heads like these have been found buried in the tombs of both males and females from the Naqada periods. They may be an indication of the authority of the buried person, as they were later, but little is known about this early period, when ancient Egypt was still becoming a cohesive society. Size of black mace: 1.75" Diameter x 1" W (4.4 cm x 2.5 cm)
