Description:

Ancient Egypt, pre-Dynastic / Naqada II period, ca. 3500 to 3000 BCE. A globe-shaped mace head made of a beautiful grey and blue-black stone with a drilled center hole and a smooth surface; the piece has a very pleasing weight in the hand and was likely mounted on a wooden pole in its original use. Items shaped like this one have been found in Naqada II tombs of both males and females, and the form seems to have replaced the earlier disc-shaped mace heads of the Naqada I period. They may be an indication of the authority of the buried person, but little is known about this early period. Size: 2.35" W x 2.1" H (6 cm x 5.3 cm)
