Description:

Ancient Egypt, Early Dynastic Period to Old Kingdom, 2nd to 3rd Dynasty, ca. 2890 to 2613 BCE. A hand-carved stone jar with a graceful piriform body and a gently rounded shoulder, made from a tuffaceous limestone. Such jars were intended to be filled with offerings and left as votives at temples or shrines devoted to specific deities. This type of limestone was mined the early Pre-Dynastic period and artisans shaped such vessels using hand-held stone borers and abrasive desert sand. In the Naqada III period, they developed stone borers that allowed them to expand beyond a simple tubular cavity, hence the shape of this vessel’s bore hole suggests that its makers did not yet have access to that technology yet. Size: 2.5" Diameter x 3.75" H (6.4 cm x 9.5 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Charles and Lorraine Janda estate, Hinsdale, Illinois, USA, acquired in Egypt in the 1970s and thence by descent
