Description:

Ancient Egypt, Ptolemaic Period, ca. 332 to 30 BCE. A hefty bronze tetrobol coin, likely minted under Ptolemy III. Obverse is the laureate head of Zeus as Ammon facing right with a ram horn in his curly hair. The reverse of a standing eagle on a thunderbolt, an "E" between the legs, with the head turned to the right, a cornucopia over the left wing. Attributing these particular bronze coins can be difficult, most are often dated as Ptolemy IV, however most authorities now agree that the "E" monogram is likely for Ptolemy III Euergetes coin (reign 246 to 222 BCE) minted in Alexandria. Size: 1.53" Diameter (3.9 cm); weight: 39.6 grams
