Description:

Egypt, Ptolemaic Period, ca. 332 to 30 BCE. A gorgeous, hand-carved sandstone relief of rough trapezoidal form depicting the left-facing visage of a god or king. The masculine countenance exhibits a sloped nose with a slightly flared nostril, deeply incised lips with an indented corner, a well-defined chin, and a flush cheek in front of a partial ear. His almond-shaped eye is accentuated with fine cosmetic lines that sweep behind the exterior canthus, and the corner of a headdress or crown can be seen just past the outermost tip. This style of dignified relief panel was initially popular during the late New Kingdom period and persisted throughout the Dynastic and post-Dynastic periods of ancient Egypt. Size: 6.375" W x 6.6" H (16.2 cm x 16.8 cm); 8.375" H (21.3 cm) on included custom stand.

Cf. an example from the Late Dynastic to the Ptolemaic Period at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 07.228.7
