Description:

Ancient Egypt, Third Intermediate Period, 21st to 25th Dynasty, ca. 1076 to 664 BCE. A lovely relief panel, hand-carved from pale orange-red sandstone, depicting a trio of uraeus cobras, each in a reared position with a flared hood along its neck. Each animal has a rounded face with raised ovoid eyes and pinched cheeks, and surmounting the heads are a corresponding trio of circular sun disks. Faint traces of original red and blue pigmentation are visible across the faces and bodies of each snake, suggesting this relief was painted in bright pigmentation when first carved. The uraeus cobra (plural uraei) is an ancient symbol of royalty, sovereignty, and divine authority, and is typically seen on the headdress of pharaohs. Size: 6.75" W x 6.5" H (17.1 cm x 16.5 cm); 10.625" H (27 cm) on included custom stand.
