Description:

Egypt, Third Intermediate Period, ca. 1070 - 712 BCE. A kind and sweetly sorrowful wood sarcophagus mask of a man, wearing white and black striped headdress, with bronze eyebrow and eyelid inlays, stone eye inlays, gently smiling mouth with dimpled cheeks, large nose with slight inward curve at base and flared nostrils, and reddish/pink painted face. This mask exudes an air of human alive-ness not often seen in Egyptian art. Masterfully crafted from imported wood layered with gesso and linen. Mounting pegs still remain on rear. 14"H x 12-1/2"W. Custom stand.

Provenance: Ex-Ira Statfeld Collection, NY, ex-Recanti Collection, originally sold in the 1950s.

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14.

  • Condition: Gesso losses along edges, enhancement of gesso (most noticeable on proper left cheek). Original bronze eyes reattached with a few almost invisible breaks, eyes and pupils appear to be replacements and are painted which leads me to believe they are plaster, not stone.
